Types of Neck Pain
Non Specific Neck Pain
This term refers to neck pain which may occur without specific trauma to the neck. The symptoms are usually pain and reduced range of motion in the neck. There is usually no numbness, pins and needles, pain or nerve issues down the hand with this condition. The contributing structure of pain may be a joint in the neck, a muscle in the neck or a ligament in the neck. Some conditions which may fall under this category include:
Acute wry neck
Facet joint irritation
Muscle strain
Ligament strain​
Radiculopathy (Pain in neck with arm symptoms)
This refers to neck pain with any or all of the following down the arm:
Pain
Weakness
Numbness
Pins and needles
Burning sensations
This usually occurs as a result of irritation to the specific nerve root in the neck.
Traumatic Causes of Neck Pain
This describes causes of neck pain which may be caused by trauma, this may involve a car accident, direct fall onto the neck or getting hit on the head. Some of these conditions include:
Whiplash Associated Disorder
Fracture in the neck
Degeneration and Ageing
This describes the basic process of degeneration in the neck that takes place with ageing. In general this is termed Osteoarthritis. As one ages, there is a gradual loss in joint space which may result in neck irritation that manifests as pain as well as reduced range of motion. This may be a normal part of ageing but can still be managed to help control and improve symptoms.
